Auto electricians diagnose and repair electrical faults in vehicles. Modern vehicles rely heavily on electrical and electronic controls such as satellite navigation systems.

  • Duties of an auto electrician may include:
  • Using specialised equipment to take readings from the vehicle to identify faults
  • Checking and testing wiring systems
  • Researching faults using manufacturers’ manuals
  • Re-testing systems to ensure repairs have been successful

As an auto electrician you will need to demonstrate:

  • Good practical and problem solving skills
  • The ability to keep up to date with developments in engine and electrical technologies
  • The ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills
  • The ability to understand electrical wiring diagrams

Auto electricians specialise in the electrical components of vehicles and so need to be trained in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair / Auto Electrical at level 2 in order to carry out this role.  You will be expected to display a genuine interest in vehicle maintenance and repair.

If you wish to install DAB (Disgital Audio Broadcasting) equipment in vehicles you will need to complete an ATA DAB, this is an accreditation that demonstrates current competence in your job role and is valid for three years.

Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependent on the geographical area.

Auto electricians normally work 40 hours per week from Monday to Friday, although some employers may operate an on-call service for emergencies on a rota system necessitating some weekend and evening work. You would be based in a garage or workshop and may be out on the road if needed.

Salary:

  • Trainee auto electricians can expect to earn between £7,000-£11,000 per year
  • Newly qualified auto electricians can expect to earn between £14,500-£17,000 per year
  • Experienced auto electricians may expect between £17,500-£21,000
    Senior auto electricians can expect up to £25,000

There may be opportunities for shift and overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement, company pension and private healthcare schemes.

Apprenticeships

Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) As an apprentice, you could work for a dealership and focus on a particular manufacturer, or work for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles.  In both, you'll choose your area of specialization, whether that's motorcycles, cars, heavy vehicles or vehicle elctrical systems.
