Light vehicle MOT examiners are responsible for testing and servicing light vehicles such as cars, and vans under 3.5 tonnes, to ensure they are safe to be driven on the roads. The MOT testers carry out the role of a diagnostic technician as well as being responsible for testing the safety of the vehicles brought to them.

There is a minimum age requirement of 20 years and you will need to be sponsored by your testing station in order to sit the qualifications in MOT testing. The test also requires you to have a full driving licence for the class/classes of vehicles you wish to test, and there can be no unspent convictions for criminal offences.
Current MOT Testers are now required to undertake a minimum of 3 hours of annual training to remain up to date with best practice standards. All MOT Testers must complete an MOT annual assessment based on the DVSA specification to maintain their professional status.

Existing MOT Testers are now required to complete 3 hours of training per year and pass an online Annual Assessment base on this training.

All vehicle test examiners employed by the Driver & Vehicle Testing Agency are fully qualified mechanics. They must have obtained at least one of the following qualifications (or their equivalent) prior to appointment:
In addition, they must have served an apprenticeship of at least three years prequalification and have two years post-qualification experience.
After recruitment and before carrying out tests in the “live” environment, they must successfully complete an intensive programme of five weeks training which includes both practical and written examinations. This programme is accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
The above qualifications represent the minimum we accept. Many of our staff at both examiner and more senior levels have a range of additional and/or higher technical qualifications.

Most MOT technicians work 40 hours a week from Monday to Saturday. This may include some shift and overtime work. You may find yourself working for a dealership or independent garage. Some tasks may be physically demanding, although you will use lifting equipment to move heavy parts.

Light vehicle MOT technicians would progress into this role after experience as diagnostic technicians qualified at level 3 in light vehicle maintenance and repair. You will also need at least 4 years experience repairing light vehicles prior to taking your MOT training.
