Light vehicle MOT examiners are responsible for testing and servicing light vehicles such as cars, and vans under 3.5 tonnes, to ensure they are safe to be driven on the roads. The MOT testers carry out the role of a diagnostic technician as well as being responsible for testing the safety of the vehicles brought to them.
Duties will include:

  • Diagnosing the cause of a problem
  • Repairing the problem in line with manufacturers’ standards
  • Repairing and replacing vehicle components
  • Testing existing and repaired systems
  • Checking for problems in newer vehicles with testing equipment connected to the vehicle’s electronic control unit (ECU)
  • Liaison with manufacturers and parts advisors
  • Ensuring the vehicle is road safe
  • Writing service reports on the work carried out

As a light vehicle MOT technician you will need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent practical skills
  • The ability to work quickly with attention to detail
  • The ability to work without supervision
  • Good communication skills
  • The ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • A reasonable level of fitness and normal colour vision
  • Confidence in working with diagnostic equipment
  • The ability to keep calm under pressure and stay focussed
  • The ability to solve problems
  • The ability to create written service reports

There is a minimum age requirement of 20 years and you will need to be sponsored by your testing station in order to sit the qualifications in MOT testing. The test also requires you to have a full driving licence for the class/classes of vehicles you wish to test, and there can be no unspent convictions for criminal offences.

Current MOT Testers are now required to undertake a minimum of 3 hours of annual training to remain up to date with best practice standards.  All MOT Testers must complete an MOT annual assessment based on the DVSA specification to maintain their professional status.

IMI Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 1 and 2)

IMI Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7)

IMI Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management

New MOT Testers

Existing MOT Testers

Existing MOT Testers are now required to complete 3 hours of training per year and pass an online Annual Assessment base on this training. 

 

Please note to be an MOT Examiner in Northern Ireland you will require the following:

All vehicle test examiners employed by the Driver & Vehicle Testing Agency are fully qualified mechanics. They must have obtained at least one of the following qualifications (or their equivalent) prior to appointment:

  • City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Craft Certificate 381 Part III
  • City and Guilds Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles Certificates 383 Level 3
  • BTEC (A8) Certificate in Motor Vehicle Engineering Level 3
  • Scottish Qualifications Authority - SNVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Mechanical & Electronic Systems Maintenance and Repair (Light Vehicle or Heavy Vehicle)
  • City and Guilds - 330 NVQ in Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems
  • National Council for Vocational Qualifications - Level 3 in Vehicle Mechanical & Electronic Systems (Heavy Vehicles - Maintenance and Repair) or Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems (Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair)
  • BTEC - Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems - Maintenance and Repair Light Vehicles (Schedule No 125) or Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems - Maintenance (Level 3, Schedule No 126) Heavy Vehicles.

In addition, they must have served an apprenticeship of at least three years prequalification and have two years post-qualification experience.

After recruitment and before carrying out tests in the “live” environment, they must successfully complete an intensive programme of five weeks training which includes both practical and written examinations. This programme is accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

The above qualifications represent the minimum we accept. Many of our staff at both examiner and more senior levels have a range of additional and/or higher technical qualifications.

Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependent on the geographical area.

Most MOT technicians work 40 hours a week from Monday to Saturday. This may include some shift and overtime work. You may find yourself working for a dealership or independent garage. Some tasks may be physically demanding, although you will use lifting equipment to move heavy parts.

Salary:

  • Salaries may range from £22,000 to £27,000 depending on level of knowledge and experience

There may be opportunities for shift and overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement, company pension and private healthcare schemes.

Light vehicle MOT technicians would progress into this role after experience as diagnostic technicians qualified at level 3 in light vehicle maintenance and repair. You will also need at least 4 years experience repairing light vehicles prior to taking your MOT training.
