Mobile service technicians service and repair cars, vans, and larger vehicles such as lorries and coaches. They work from a mobile unit and travel to the customer in order to carry out the work. They are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics and electronics, from engine and exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features.

You will need to be trained in vehicle maintenance and repair and, depending on where your interests lie, you may decide to specialise as a light vehicle, motorcycle, heavy vehicle or lift truck technician. You will be required to have a full driving licence.

Most service technicians work 40 hours a week from Monday to Saturday. This may include some shift and overtime work. You will often be working outdoors, but your employer will provide protective clothing.

Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) In this apprenticeship you’ll choose your area of specialization, whether that’s motorcycles, cars, heavy vehicles or vehicle electrical systems. You’ll be working in a service technician type role, carrying out routine maintenance and basic repairs, as well as identifying and reporting faults.
