Motorsport technical manager specialises in maintaining and repairing motor sport vehicles such as cars and motorbikes. Motor sport technical managers will often find themselves in a racing environment and are expected to be at the forefront of the track, ready to work on any unexpected problems during the race, or carry out quick checks between laps.

Duties may include:

  • Setting up vehicles to match track and weather conditions
  • Monitoring split times and engine data during races
  • Making final adjustments during stops and relaying technical instructions to drivers or riders
  • Carrying out after-tests on vehicles at the end of races to check for signs of damage

As a motor sport technical manager you will need to demonstrate:

  • A strong interest in motor sport
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work under pressure and think on your feet

You will need to have a proven track record in motorsport maintenance and repair work, preferably in a racing environment, to get into this very competitive career. You will require qualifications in motor sport maintenance and repair in addition to your experience in this area.

You may be able to train initially as a maintenance and repair technician, then specialise with further training and experience.

Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependent on the geographical area.

Being part of a race team often means you will work long and irregular hours. There will be a good deal of travel, depending on venues of races, and this may fluctuate according to the season.

Salary:

  • For newly qualified specialists you can expect to earn between £15,000-£20,000 per year
  • With experience this may rise to between £21,000-£40,000 per year

There may be opportunities for overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement, company pension and private healthcare schemes.
