SMART repairers, otherwise known as small-medium-area-repair-technicians, specialise in repairing minor vehicle damage such as scratches to panels and bumpers, alloy wheels or interior trims. SMART repairers will often be mobile and travel to clients. Duties will commonly include:

  • Travelling to the client
  • Repairing minor scratches and damage to the vehicle
  • Using specialist equipment to carry out repairs such as welding
  • Assessing damage
  • Estimating time and cost of repair

SMART repairers only repair minor damage to a vehicle; they do not replace components and will refer customers to a bodyshop if the damage is too extensive.

As a SMART repairer you will need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • The ability to work under minimum supervision
  • The ability to assess minor damage needs
  • Good numeracy skills to estimate time and cost of repair
  • The ability to use specialist equipment
  • The ability to follow written instructions

You would normally progress from being a body and paint technician, before specialising as a SMART repairer. You will need to have a good knowledge of vehicle body and paint operations in order to carry out minor repairs and be qualified in this area to at least a level 2.

Once working as a SMART repairer you can complete an Automotive Technician Accreditation in Cosmetic Repair, this shows current competence and is valid for three years.  To find out more go to ATA Cosmetic Repair.

SMART repairers are usually mobile and so carry all their specialist equipment in, and work from, a mobile unit. This means you will be travelling to your clients rather than being based in one place, making working life flexible.

Salary:

  • You can expect to earn between £16,000-£22,000

You may be able to set up your own SMART repair company and become your own boss.

If you work for a bodyshop or specialist SMART repair company there may be opportunities for shift and overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement, company pension and private healthcare schemes

Apprenticeships

Vehicle Body and Paint (Intermediate- Paint Technician)   As an apprentice, you’ll have the choice to focus on mechanical, electrical or trim body fitting; body repair; or body finishing. Mechanical, electrical and trim technicians repair moving parts and electronics.
