Glazing technicians are also known as windscreen technicians: they replace and repair windscreens as well as rear and side windows. They may work on a variety of vehicles and are usually mobile though you may find them at garages or specialist centres. Their work typically involves:

  • Removing moulds and trims from around the windows
  • Disconnecting any electrical components
  • Removing damaged glass
  • Selecting the right sized windscreen to be fitted
  • Replacing the glass according to the vehicle manufacturing specifications
  • Refitting the removed components

As a glazing technician you will need to express:

  • A good general knowledge of motor vehicles
  • The ability to follow written instructions
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Good communication skills

It may be possible to train at this level via an apprentice/traineeship scheme, these may vary from employer to employer but typically work towards an N/SVQ level 2.. To do this you may need some GCSEs in English, maths, science, IT or appropriate equivalents. Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependable on the geographical area.

Most auto glazing technicians work around 40 hours per week, this is usually between Monday and Friday, some employers may operate an on call service in case of emergencies. Auto glazing technician may work from a mobile unit where they travel to their customers or they may be based in a workshop or specialist centre.

Salary:

  • Trainee auto glazing technicians can expect to earn between £12,500 per year
  • Experienced auto glazing technicians may expect around £20,000 per year
  • Senior auto glazing technicians can expect up to £25000

There may be opportunities for shift ad overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement and company pension and private healthcare schemes

Training is usually on the job and will work towards an NVQ in auto glazing.

 

Apprenticeships

Automotive Glazing Technician/Windscreen Fitter (Intermediate)  This Intermediate Apprenticeship offers a range of job roles at manufacturing, craft and technical level working with glass using a range of processes such as cutting, engraving, glass blowing, the manufacture and installation of windows, doors, conservatories, soffits and bargeboards, the repair and replacement of automotive glazing and the installation of photovoltaic’s.
