Service technician’s service & repair vehicles such as cars, vans, motorbikes and larger vehicles such as lorries & coaches. You are trained in all areas of vehicle mechanics & electronics from engine & exhaust systems to air conditioning and security features.

Service technician’s duties will commonly include:

  • Servicing vehicles – carrying out checks and maintenance according to the manufacturers guidelines
  • Repairing & replacing faulty parts and components
  • Advising customers on repairs needed
  • Producing time and cost estimates
  • Maintaining repair and service records

As a service technician you will need to express the ability to:

  • Excellent practical skills
  • The ability to work quickly and pay attention to detail

  • A reasonable level of fitness and normal colour vision

You will need to be trained in vehicle maintenance and repair, depending on where your interests lie you may decide to specialise as a light vehicle, motorcycle, heavy vehicle or lift truck technician.

There are a range of qualifications in vehicle maintenance and repair covering the underpinning knowledge you will need to get started and the hands on skills needed to carry out the job.

Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependent on the geographical area.

Most service technicians work 40 hours a week between Monday and Saturday. This may include some shift and overtime work. You may find yourself working for a large dealership or small independent garage. Some tasks may be physically demanding although you will use lifting equipment to move heavy parts.

Salary:

  • As a trainee service technician you may expect to start on between £7000 - £11,000 depending on your age and stage of training
  • Once you are qualified you may expect to earn between £13,000 - £20,000
  • As you gain more experience and complete further training you can expect this salary to rise, please see the following for further information on diagnostic technician and master technicians

It is important to remember that pay rates for apprentice/traineeships will vary fro area to area. Depending on your employer you may also be entitled to holiday payment and company pension and private health care schemes.

There are several ways of starting your career as a trainee service technician:

  • Train at work, in a dedicated training facility managed by the employer.
  • Many manufacturers offer apprenticeship programmes that involve training at specially equipped centres. Please click here for links to employers websites
  • Study on day release at local colleges and training providers whilst in employment
  • Go to college or to a private training provider who will organise work placements for you
  • Study full time at college with practical exercises as well as classroom work

You may be able to get into this job via an apprentice/traineeship scheme. Apprentice/traineeship schemes may vary from employer to employer but they will typically work towards an N/SVQ level 2 at this stage in vehicle maintenance and repair. To do this you may need some GCSEs in English, maths, science, IT or appropriate equivalents.
