Fleet managers are responsible for the efficient running of an organisation’s fleet of vehicles, dealing with the day to day operation of the fleet.

Duties may include:

  • Managing contracts and developing new business
  • Scheduling service and repair programmes
  • Finding cost effective sources of new vehicles
  • Co-ordinating and replacing existing vehicles

As a fleet manager you will need to demonstrate:

  • Strong organisational skills
  • Good IT skills
  • The ability to lead a team
  • Excellent negotiating skills

In order to move into fleet management you would normally need some managerial experience. Previous experience in fleet, logistics or vehicle leasing or administration would be advantageous.

Although there are no specific qualifications for entry to a fleet management position, you may consider studying for qualifications that will help you in your career, for example, automotive specific management courses or administration and business courses.

Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependent on the geographical area.

You would normally work 37 hours a week Monday to Friday. You may be expected to do occasional late or weekend work around busier periods. You would be mainly office based, visiting garages and vehicle launches when necessary.

Salary:

  • Trainee fleet managers can expect to earn between £18,000 to £21,000
  • Experienced fleet managers can expect £26,000 to £35,000
  • Senior managers can expect £45,000 or more

There may be opportunities for shift and overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement, company pension and private healthcare schemes.

You may be able to work your way up to this position from that of a fleet controller or, if you have a degree, some employers may place you on a graduate training scheme.
