Automotive Trainers are responsible for training / teaching students or adult learners both the theory and practical knowledge that they need in order to pass certain qualifications or to do their jobs effectively.  Duties include:

  • Delivering set learning programmes to groups of students / learners
  • Assessing students and marking their work against skills required
  • Mentoring and encouraging students to complete their qualifications or learning
  • Completing all necessary paperwork regarding students, in line with awarding organisation regulations

As an Automotive Trainer you will need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication skills; you need to be able to teach students / learners complex theories such as vehicle systems technology or automotive related subjects
  • Good maths, English and ICT to enable you to meet the standards required of a teacher / trainer
  • That you are prepared to continually update your knowledge and skills in relation to your subject area and your teaching skills
  • Ability to work on your own, establishing a good working relationship with your students / learners, and as part of a team with your work colleagues
  • Able to report accurately and to transfer course content into practical and theroetical programme delivery

Most Automotive Trainers progress into the role after they have gained experience within the industry.  Many colleges and training providers will train you once you are employed however you should always check this when applying as there are timescales to achieve certain qualifications when working in publicly funded training environments.

Typically, you will be expected to complete Continuous Professional Development (CPD), usually approx. 30 hours a year.

Please note: these figures are intended as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and be dependant on geographical area.

Automotive Trainers usually work 37 hours a week from Monday to Friday.  If working for a college you will have the school holidays off work, this does not apply to working for a private training provider.  You will be based in a college or training centre and may work with local employers and automotive businesses.  If you are an assessor as part of your role you may have to do workplace visits to do the assessments.

  • Trainee / New Automotive Trainers can expect to earn between £18,000 - £20,000
  • Experienced Trainers can earn up to £35,000

Most Automotive Trainers move into the role after a minimum of three years of industry experience in their chosen discipline.  You will need GCSEs/Standard Grades in English, Maths, Science and IT or appropriate equivalents.
