Parts managers are responsible for running parts departments and looking after a small team.

Duties may vary from employer to employer but generally include:

  • Helping increase sales
  • Staffing the department
  • Creating and overseeing annual budgets
  • Reviewing sales figures, costs and stock on a monthly basis to ensure budget benchmarks are met
  • Confirming parts are appropriately coded to enable dealerships to claim complete refunds for un-used parts

As a parts manager you will need to demonstrate:

  • Good leadership skills
  • Good people management
  • Excellent team building skills
  • A professional manner
  • Good organisational skills

You will need a sound technical knowledge of a range of components in order to sell parts and advise customers. You should have at least one year’s supervisory experience and one year’s experience of working in a parts department.

Some employers may look for specific qualifications in management for entry to this role, and there are a range of qualifications available such as NVQs, VRQs and diplomas in management studies.   Background knowledge in business and administration may also be advantageous.

Please note: These figures are meant as a guide only and may vary from employer to employer and may be dependent on the geographical area.

You will work between 37 and 40 hours per week, and part time work may be available with some companies. You may be required to work extended hours, including weekends and evenings, to achieve departmental goals. Your work will consist of desk time as well as manual work, locating parts in the stock room, and organising parts for distribution.

Salary:

  • You may earn between £30,000-£33,000 depending on experience

There may be opportunities for shift and overtime pay depending on your employer. You may also be eligible for holiday entitlement, company pension and private healthcare schemes.

You would normally progress into this role from that of a parts advisor or team leader.

 

Progression from:

  • Progression form Parts Adviser or Team leader

 

Experience in:
